Personal:

My name is Vinh Nguyen. I'm 28 years old, former Marine...

Started running when I joined the military in 1999. I did not enjoy running until 2006-7 when I started training for my first marathon. In the Marines, we ran an average of 3-5 miles. I never ran any distances longer than that until I started training for the Myrtle Beach Marathon in 2007.

Currently working as a government contractor (electronics technician).

I finished my Associates of Science in August and have finally been able to train hard full time. I decided to take time of school to see how much of a difference it will make and maybe hopefully achieve my goal and qualify for Boston.

Sorry just to warn you guys, I don't write good race reports lol. I just want to share some of the details about the race though.

If you look at the past couple months of my training, you might think I was crazy to run an ultra. I know I haven't trained as hard as I should have but I just wanted to see how I would do.

This was by far the most gratifying race I've ran. It took so much out of me to push through the pain and to keep ahead of everyone else. I took off in the lead and never looked back. The weather here in SC has been pretty hot and humid the past couple of months but luckily this weekend was much cooler. I believe it was only in the mid to high 80's.  So the race was from 7am - 7 pm. It was based on lap completions. 1 lap = 1.03 miles. After each lap, we had to go into the gazebo where our gear was and we had to mark each mile as we ran by it. It definitely took some time off each lap but since everyone had to do it, I didn't mind. There were 15 runners total. Most of them were experienced ultra runners. One of the ladies was the course record holder. After knowing this, I didn't think I could win so my goal was just to shoot for 60 miles. I really didn't have a strategy going into the race. Once we started, I just kept going and would just figure it out from there. Here is what happened.

Took the lead from the start and just took an easy pace and kept going.

Hit 26.2 miles in under 4:30

Kept going and haven't walked yet.

Hit 50k in about 5:15

After I hit 50k, I started run/walk.

Hit 50 miles under 10 hours

Hit 60.8 miles in 11:52

2nd place ran 51.5 miles.

I think someone took pictures during the race. I will post them once I find them. The only picture I have right now is of my plaque. It's a lil weird but I like it. =) Thanks guys/gals for your support on FRB.

So yesterday I tried running a mile to see how my foot felt. Still some pain in my right arch. Not too happy about that but what can I do. I'll just keep cross training on the elliptical and the occasional swim. Today I did a body pump class (haven't done that in a while). Felt weaker than I used to be but it felt good to get in a lift session. I have been doing pull ups/pushups/sit ups still so I'm not all scrawny in case you are wondering =P *Flexes for everyone =)* I have lost some weight though...I'm down to like 140 now. About 5 lbs down from the beginning of the year. So there is only about 9-10 weeks of training before the St. George marathon. I hope I can recover soon so I can actually get in some decent training. I'm not so sure I can get to the fitness level I want to be to BQ =( I guess we will see. You guys might have to carry me to the finish. This blog entry is for Bonnie btw. I know my blog has been bland and boring but I suck at these kind of things. I'll try to be less boring and get on FRB more often. Hope everyone is doing well!
