Personal:

My name is Vinh Nguyen. I'm 28 years old, former Marine...

Started running when I joined the military in 1999. I did not enjoy running until 2006-7 when I started training for my first marathon. In the Marines, we ran an average of 3-5 miles. I never ran any distances longer than that until I started training for the Myrtle Beach Marathon in 2007.

Currently working as a government contractor (electronics technician).

I finished my Associates of Science in August and have finally been able to train hard full time. I decided to take time of school to see how much of a difference it will make and maybe hopefully achieve my goal and qualify for Boston.

So today was the Reindeer 5k.....

Weather - Rainy - 53 degrees F

It had been raining since last night and forcasted to be raining most of the morning. I was kind of bummed but prepared for the worst.

I woke up at 5 am and got everything ready (outfit, drinks, shoes, bib, etc). Drank about 20 oz of water and gatorade right away. I didn't drink anything until 1 hour before my race and just sipped on water and gatorade.

Did the 5k warm up that Burt gave me.

2 mile warm up about 45 mins before the race start time.

15 min before start time...ran several strides and jogged some more to keep my heart rate up. (1.3 miles)

Unfortunately, the race was delayed for 15 mins and I was already at the start...just waiting with the crowd. Rain was still pouring and I just jogged in place till we started. I was totally soaked by then...shoes, socks, everything! Well, I did the best I could and felt good during the entire run. I know I could have ran better if it wasn't raining (better traction and if I wasn't soaked), but I guess I'm happy that I got a PR.

Here are my splits off my Garmin for the 5k.

mile 1 - 6:21

mile 2 - 6:40

mile 3 - 6:42

last .13 - 0:45 (5:48 pace)

Official time was 20:29 (6:35 pace). Sorry I didn't get any pics today but will post some if I find any of their website.

NICE JOB!! I am sorry it rained on your parade, the weather really can mess things up especially in a short distance like that. And the 15 minute delay did not help either. What matters is that you did your best, and you had a darn good sprint to the finish, AWESOME SPLITS!!!!!

Awesome job on the race in the rain. Got to love getting a PR. And next time under better conditions you will do even better. Great report and race again.

Thanks Kelli! The rain did suck...but what can you do. At least I'm improving my times so I'm happy about that and also that I got your support =)

Huan - Thanks man! Hopefully on our next 5k, we'll both smash our 5k and break 20 mins (not sure if you have already). I think my goal is to actually get sub 19 sometime next year.

Have a great weekend to both of you!

Vinh! Just think how much you would have shattered your PR if it wasn't raining. You'll probably have a break out 5k soon. Awesome job!

Excellent race. Good strong effort. Too bad the weather did not cooperate. Wet shoes and socks will slow you down.

From Teena on Sat, Dec 05, 2009 at 22:20:44 from 174.52.45.85

AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!!

Congrats on the PR and the wicked fast time.

Very nice.

Burt - Thanks! I guess I'll just have to wait till next time (probably won't be till sometime next year after my marathon). Shaving off over a minute isn't too shabby though. Let's see if I can do it again next time.

Lyman - Thanks! Sorry I didn't meet the time that you gave me. It would have been nice to break 20 mins. I will next time though. I agree that wet shoes/socks suck. I was just soaked and felt weighed down.

Teena - Thanks! I need to start swimming again too. I probably can't swim 100m without taking a break. I have a huge problem with my breathing when I'm swimming.

Great Pr, and great job in the horrible rain, sorry about that although I am 99.9% sure you'll pr again on your next race if the weather is right, it makes huge difference the weather and having soggy feet :-)

Swimming helps allot with your breathing for running, although if you want to become a faster and better runner-running is the way to go. I did do allot swimming when injured and it helps so much in training you to breathe rhythmically ;)

From Smooth on Tue, Dec 08, 2009 at 18:39:36 from 174.23.201.210

vinh!!! AWESOME job! CONGRATS on the PR! Sorry it rained on your race and what's up with the 15 min delay! That's a huge field for a 5K. VERY NICELY DONE! Can't wait to see you improve even more under better condition!

From vinh on Tue, Dec 08, 2009 at 20:47:17 from 71.68.254.197

Thanks Sandy and Smooth! I'm feeling very good with my training the past two months. I will continue to train hard and I plan to shatter my PR's next year =) Thanks for all your support.
