Personal:

My name is Vinh Nguyen. I'm 28 years old, former Marine...

Started running when I joined the military in 1999. I did not enjoy running until 2006-7 when I started training for my first marathon. In the Marines, we ran an average of 3-5 miles. I never ran any distances longer than that until I started training for the Myrtle Beach Marathon in 2007.

Currently working as a government contractor (electronics technician).

I finished my Associates of Science in August and have finally been able to train hard full time. I decided to take time of school to see how much of a difference it will make and maybe hopefully achieve my goal and qualify for Boston.

Good luck on the lottery. I am glad I am already in due to the runners series that I have been doing. I missed getting in one year. But was still able to get in by running the grand slam that year. Good luck again man. You will love it if you get in.

I hope you can get in! How did the 12 miles go?

Thanks Sam!

Mark - Yea I hope I can get it. I'm sure I'll do a lot better than last year. I'm going to try to get to SLC a week early and try to acclimatize myself to the altitude. Hopefully it'll be enough.

Michelle - I hope so too! I won't get off work for another 5 hours, so no run yet.

KP - Thanks! Yep, it's gonna be in the upper 80's where I am this weekend! Beach weather!

Kim - Thanks! Yea maybe if I don't get in St. George, then maybe TOU. My only concern for these races is the elevation. It affected me last year. Make sure you are also training hills/downhills. They can beat up your legs.

Vinh I am curious--how badly did the altitude affect you? I live at near sea-level and would like to run some marathons that are at altitude, but am wondering how severely it will effect me--do you think it caused a significant slowing for you? Was it hard to breathe?

From vinh on Fri, Apr 02, 2010 at 09:28:10 from 75.77.22.187

April - I ran the St. George Marathon last year and the altitude had an effect on me. I also didn't train any hills/downhills so that was another reason that I ran poorly. The elevation here is pretty much 20 FT or less. I believe the start of St. George is above 5000 FT. I felt like I was running 30 secs slower per mile. It wasn't really difficult to breathe but I was definitely running slower than usual. I also wasn't in the shape I am now but I was pretty sure I could have pulled out a sub 4 hour marathon easily. I'm gonna give it another shot if I can get in. Hopefully it will be a different result since I've amped up my training this time around. Which one were you planning on running?
