Personal:

My name is Vinh Nguyen. I'm 28 years old, former Marine...

Started running when I joined the military in 1999. I did not enjoy running until 2006-7 when I started training for my first marathon. In the Marines, we ran an average of 3-5 miles. I never ran any distances longer than that until I started training for the Myrtle Beach Marathon in 2007.

Currently working as a government contractor (electronics technician).

I finished my Associates of Science in August and have finally been able to train hard full time. I decided to take time of school to see how much of a difference it will make and maybe hopefully achieve my goal and qualify for Boston.

So yesterday I tried running a mile to see how my foot felt. Still some pain in my right arch. Not too happy about that but what can I do. I'll just keep cross training on the elliptical and the occasional swim. Today I did a body pump class (haven't done that in a while). Felt weaker than I used to be but it felt good to get in a lift session. I have been doing pull ups/pushups/sit ups still so I'm not all scrawny in case you are wondering =P *Flexes for everyone =)* I have lost some weight though...I'm down to like 140 now. About 5 lbs down from the beginning of the year. So there is only about 9-10 weeks of training before the St. George marathon. I hope I can recover soon so I can actually get in some decent training. I'm not so sure I can get to the fitness level I want to be to BQ =( I guess we will see. You guys might have to carry me to the finish. This blog entry is for Bonnie btw. I know my blog has been bland and boring but I suck at these kind of things. I'll try to be less boring and get on FRB more often. Hope everyone is doing well!

Very nice, you hit all the important bits: how you feel, what you weigh, and your hopes and dreams ;-).

You need to get a golf ball and roll on your arch ... and a night splint (not studly perhaps but maybe it is since Alan Cullpepper created one and he is one studly guy). Seriously, PF if not fun. But, there is plenty of time for SG, don't try to overcompensate and get hurt so close to it. You are in good shape and just need some of the traditional prep: 1 long run (18-20 miles + starting at week 4, 6 and 8 every 2 weeks run the last 8-10, 10-12, 12-14 miles at marathon pace), 1 medium long run (10-14 miles), 1 tempo run, and 2 easy aerobic runs every week and you will rock.

Hang in there!

Your fitness is there. Just take care of that PF. You've still got time.

I ditto Bonnie! Injuries stink! Keep up the positive attitude.

You're so skinny...we can carry you over the finish line no problem! :)

Bonnie - Thanks for the advice! I don't think it's a PF injury though. I believe it's just stress fractures from the ultra I ran. The pain is in the middle of my arch and not the heel. I will definitely take it easy till it heals. I like the training plan you suggested. I need to also add some hill/downhill work for STG.

Teena! - Thanks =) I'm hoping I can run next week...I feel out of shape from not running.

Smooth! - Thank you! I will stay positive =) lol, I will take you on the offer to carry me.

PF sounds better than a stress fracture. Whichever it is, hope you make a speedy recovery. Who knew running for 12 hours straight could do so much damage? Anyway, you're a tough dude and I bet you'll crush STG with a great PR, even if it's not a BQ yet.

From vinh on Wed, Jul 21, 2010 at 15:17:11 from 24.211.101.133

Thanks Joe! It should be a PR but we'll see how big of a PR it will be. Hopefully at least 30 min PR. A BQ would be a 56 min PR lol. How is the hip doing?

From SlowJoe on Thu, Jul 22, 2010 at 06:13:19 from 214.13.130.104

Yeah, I bet a 30-min PR won't be much of a problem for you, even with a blip in training. My hip is pretty good - the left HF muscle is always the first thing to get sore/tight, but it's minor, and not injured anymore.

Ooooh owie Vinh! Hope your foot gets better soon. If it helps any I haven't done any Marathon training yet..eek. :P I will do a long run tomorrow of just 12 miles. I haven't been running long at all while focusing on the Olympic Distance Tri's. Coach says I will do fine at St. George. I just don't think I will PR is all. That's ok. :D Let's still have fun anyhow!
