Personal:

My name is Vinh Nguyen. I'm 28 years old, former Marine...

Started running when I joined the military in 1999. I did not enjoy running until 2006-7 when I started training for my first marathon. In the Marines, we ran an average of 3-5 miles. I never ran any distances longer than that until I started training for the Myrtle Beach Marathon in 2007.

Currently working as a government contractor (electronics technician).

I finished my Associates of Science in August and have finally been able to train hard full time. I decided to take time of school to see how much of a difference it will make and maybe hopefully achieve my goal and qualify for Boston.

Sorry just to warn you guys, I don't write good race reports lol. I just want to share some of the details about the race though.

If you look at the past couple months of my training, you might think I was crazy to run an ultra. I know I haven't trained as hard as I should have but I just wanted to see how I would do.

This was by far the most gratifying race I've ran. It took so much out of me to push through the pain and to keep ahead of everyone else. I took off in the lead and never looked back. The weather here in SC has been pretty hot and humid the past couple of months but luckily this weekend was much cooler. I believe it was only in the mid to high 80's.  So the race was from 7am - 7 pm. It was based on lap completions. 1 lap = 1.03 miles. After each lap, we had to go into the gazebo where our gear was and we had to mark each mile as we ran by it. It definitely took some time off each lap but since everyone had to do it, I didn't mind. There were 15 runners total. Most of them were experienced ultra runners. One of the ladies was the course record holder. After knowing this, I didn't think I could win so my goal was just to shoot for 60 miles. I really didn't have a strategy going into the race. Once we started, I just kept going and would just figure it out from there. Here is what happened.

Took the lead from the start and just took an easy pace and kept going.

Hit 26.2 miles in under 4:30

Kept going and haven't walked yet.

Hit 50k in about 5:15

After I hit 50k, I started run/walk.

Hit 50 miles under 10 hours

Hit 60.8 miles in 11:52

2nd place ran 51.5 miles.

I think someone took pictures during the race. I will post them once I find them. The only picture I have right now is of my plaque. It's a lil weird but I like it. =) Thanks guys/gals for your support on FRB.

Awesome job on your first ultra bro. You really nailed that goal of 60 miles. And to win it by almost 10 miles sweet. Very good job man.

Chris - Thanks man! Yes lots of laps lol. But I didn't mind it. I kinda like seeing who I lapped.

Mark - Thanks bro! I am still in awe. Now time to recovery and work on qualifying for Boston at St. George. This is going to be a rough goal for me.

Jim - Thank you! I plan to start doing ultras more once I qualify for Boston. It would definitely be a pleasure to run some ultras in Utah with you.

Kelli - It is cool huh! Tag! It's your turn to run an ultra! =)

From Kelli on Wed, Jul 07, 2010 at 08:56:50 from 71.219.99.30

Kelli - You will do awesome on your first ultra. I know it.

Teena - Thanks Teena! I will be saying that exact same thing to you when you finish St. George ahead of me =)

Scott - Thanks! It was an awesome experience.

Smooth - Thank you! You are the one that is tough! I'm just trying to be like Smooth =) After I "hopefully qualify for Boston and run Boston" I plan on running a 100 miler next year. We'll see how that goes. I can't wait to see you and everyone else at St. George!

From SlowJoe on Thu, Jul 08, 2010 at 08:08:29 from 84.11.148.246

Wow, you nailed your goal. That is crazy impressive. Who runs 60 miles?? Great job, do your legs still work?

From vinh on Thu, Jul 08, 2010 at 12:45:08 from 75.77.22.187

Thanks Joe! My legs are pretty much fine now. I have one blister and a toenail that is about to fall off. Other than that, I'm good haha. I think I'm going to do a light workout tonight. Feeling much better now.

From Burt on Fri, Jul 09, 2010 at 03:59:31 from 68.225.214.248

Vinh I've been meaning to read your report for a while now. I finally found time at 1am. LOL! Awesome job! That's hard core! So, you beat the course record holder, but did you get the course record? Maybe I need to read it again. After I bow down and worship you.

From vinh on Fri, Jul 09, 2010 at 06:26:14 from 75.77.22.187

Thanks Burt! No I didn't beat the course record. Is is 67 laps and I only did 59. Maybe next year and actually training for an ultra might help too.

From Lyman on Fri, Jul 16, 2010 at 14:06:37 from 170.135.241.46

Vinh, that was awesome! First ultra and you come in 1st. Can't beat that! BTY - still running hard, cycling much more, and swimming alot. Getting ready for a 1/2 IM in August. I'm just a bigger slacker than you when it comes to blogging.

From vinh on Sun, Jul 18, 2010 at 18:25:57 from 24.211.101.133

Thanks Lyman! Glad to see you still training hard. Wow, 1/2 IM? I'm sure you'll do well. Will you be ready for St. George in October? I'm gonna need you to push me to keep up with you.

From missy on Fri, Jul 23, 2010 at 20:23:14 from 71.32.194.105

Vinh! Yay! I am so proud of you. :D
