Personal:

My name is Vinh Nguyen. I'm 28 years old, former Marine...

Started running when I joined the military in 1999. I did not enjoy running until 2006-7 when I started training for my first marathon. In the Marines, we ran an average of 3-5 miles. I never ran any distances longer than that until I started training for the Myrtle Beach Marathon in 2007.

Currently working as a government contractor (electronics technician).

I finished my Associates of Science in August and have finally been able to train hard full time. I decided to take time of school to see how much of a difference it will make and maybe hopefully achieve my goal and qualify for Boston.

Ran 12 miles in 1:36:00 (8:00 pace) last 2 in 7:25, 7:15. I wasn't pushing the pace or anything the first 10 miles....I just felt very comfortable. I'll try to take it easier tomorrow but no guarantees =P 8-8:15 pace is getting a lot easier to me. Maybe I should up my marathon pace?

Sorry I haven't been FRB lately. Been kinda busy and also feeling a lil sick the past several days. I need to catch up on everyone's blogs/comments. I promise I'll do it tomorrow at work =) So I wasn't feeling good enough to run yesterday...but felt much better today. I decided to only run 9 b/c I felt that I had my pace down the last 5 miles and just wanted to hold back and save it for the race. The run didn't start off to great tho. I still have problems holding back the first few miles. I ran the first mile in 8:04 and the next two were 7:44, 7:48. What is wrong with me? I wanted hit the first mile in 8:15 and the next two around 8:05. I also tied my left shoe a lil too tight and my foot was going numb. After mile 4, I got into the groove and hit the paces that I wanted (w/o lookin at the watch) which was around 7:50-8:00. Anyway, I hope everyone had a great weekend. I will hit everyone up tomorrow. I promise!

Total time - 1:11:24 (avg pace 7:56)

EZ 2 miles. Will report about the race tomorrow =)

Update: So it is freakin snowing here in Myrtle Beach. As of right now the race is delayed half an hour, but it may be pushed back or even cancelled =( It's not snowing bad or anything but it hardly ever snows here and people are freaking out. Will update if anything changes. Thanks for all the comments so far. I will reply soon!

Sorry everyone but the race was cancelled due to the snow. I've been pretty upset all day. I will reply to everyone soon. However, I did run today out of frustration.

Ran 18 miles total, no water or gu.

First 17 miles avg 8:00 flat pace, mile 17 was 7:06

1 cool down mile

A lil bit windy on the way back...

Wish I could have had a race report for everyone

8 miles @ 8:07 pace. I guess next week I'll start adding intervals/tempos into my workouts to get ready for the upcoming 5k/10k next month.

Upper body and core work out. No run today cuz they were doing construction on the roads by my house. Planning on 10 tomorrow.

So I decided to run a couple of mile sprints in with my 10 mile run to see where my speed was at. I thought I may have gotten slower since I  haven't pushed the pace in a while. The pace for most of the run was slow around 8:30-9:15 b/c those sprints killed me.

Mile 3 - 5:40 Had to walk for a couple minutes after b/c I felt my heart was going to burst. I don't think I've ever ran a sub 6 before

Mile 8 - 6:10 Slightly uphill in the wind. I wasn't pushing as hard as the first sprint. Maybe b/c I was pretty much gassed after that first one.

Overall, pretty happy with the results. I see everyone is stepping up their training lately. Now it is my turn! =)

TM work out....legs were still a lil sore from Thursday's run.

1 mile warm up

2 miles 7.0 mph (8:34 pace) 4% incline

.5 mile recovery 0% incline

1 mile 9.5 mph (6:18 pace) 0% incline

.5 mile cool down

Felt dehydrated so I cut it short. Planning on 12 miles tomorrow.

Upper body and core after the run.

Easy 9 @ 8:18 pace. Was lazy and started my run late in the day =( Planning on some intervals, leg workout, short tempo, inclines this week. Try to squeeze a longer run in as well.

Upper body and core work out...TM speed intervals tomorrow. 800's at 6:00 pace with a 400m recovery at 7:45 pace?

TM workout Speed Intervals

1 mile warm up

.5 mile intervals at 10 mph (6:00 pace) followed by .25 mile recovery at 7.0 mph (8:34 pace) x 4

took a couple of min to get some water

.5 mile intervals at 9.5 mph (6:18 pace) followed by .25 mile recovery at 7.0 mph (8:34 pace) x 4

1 mile cool down

Followed Cal's advice and slowed down the recovery to 7.0, I think I would have died if I did the 7:45 pace I was thinking about. First 4 sets were tough, last 4 not so bad. 6:18 felt comfortably hard. I'll try this again next week but maybe change it to 3/4 mile at 6:00 pace with a slower recovery x 6?

So the legs are feeling surprisingly good today. Not much soreness. Not sure if it has anything to do with the epsom salt bath. I've been soaking in that after a hard workout. I plan on running an easy recovery today after work. I wanted to get some advice on something though. When I was in the Corps and I was training hard core and probably not very smart, I was running with a 20lb vest. I was only doing 1-3 miles with it but it helped me get faster and run 3 miles in 19 flat (on a windy day) Well I still have the weight vest and was wondering if it's a smart/dumb idea to train with it?

Late work out....

Swam for 30 min

Ran 3 easy miles

Upper body and core workout

No run/workout today. Didn't have enough time to squeeze one in. Going to my first live MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fight tonight. I'm a hard core fan =P
